After taking all of the schooling and the years of residency and everything then your off on your own making your own money and fixing people up, how much debt will you be in after all of those years of taking out loans to get where you want to be?

I just heard on the radio yesterday that doctors can graduate from med school with $100K in debt and I don’t doubt it. [Several docs in my extended family.]

Internship and residency – and fellowships, too – are all paid positions, though the pay is modest for the work put in [80-hour work weeks, with on-call responsibility every 3rd or 4th night, which means 24-36 hours straight of on-call]. Plastic Surgery is one of the longer residencies, too.

In high school, you’ll want to take all the AP science and math you can, as well as other AP/Honors classes. You want to be able to handle the load you’re going to have to take in college and want to show that you’re a serious student.

There are some websites for prospective med students, but I can’t recall what they are off the top of my head. If you do a search on “medical school” or some such, you should be able to find some leads – that’s how I got to them. I think the AMA has info for med students on its website. And I would guess that the professional organization for plastic surgeons would have info, too.

There’s also a book, which I found at my small public library, “Medical School Admission Requirements”, that may interest you.

Good luck to you!
